James Barrow, the UK’s first taiko teacher came to Devon in early April to share Euphoria with us. A piece he wrote to celebrate life, and I think you did it proud…19 people came from across Devon to take part in this 6 hour workshop. And by all accounts, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. James has given his nod of approval to our venue, which ticks so many of the boxes needed for a taiko venue. We even had great sunshine for our tea, cake and lunch breaks in the garden of the wonderful Kenn Centre. More importantly, everyone bought along delicious treats for us to enjoy. Yvonne has started a tradition of bringing home-made cake – so beautiful!
All in all, it turned out to be a great day, and people are already asking for details of the next guest artist day. I was honoured to be able to host this workshop and I’m already looking forward to announcing the next.
What people said about James Barrow’s workshop:
“Thanks so much for organising and hosting James Barrow’s workshop yesterday. It was a great session and everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. A beautiful day all round! Many thanks also to James Barrow, who must have been totally exhausted when he got home after such a long day…”
“Thank you very much for a terrific day today. We both enjoyed the challenge very much, James’ relaxed but thorough way of teaching and fun with a lovely mix of people. Thanks for being instrumental in bringing us this opportunity. May there be more.”
What is Euphoria all about?
This is what James has to say about his piece: “Euphoria is a piece that unashamedly celebrates the visceral experience of feeling totally awesome. I get that joyful feeling a lot when I play taiko. Or think of those sunny days when you’re walking around energised with a big grin and the day is unfolding beautifully. That’s the feeling I hope to convey. These moments and days might not happen as often as we’d like, but I think that sense of the sheer joy of being alive is under-represented in our culture. So why the hell not write a piece about it.” It really is as euphoric as it sounds!
