Home-Ed Family Taiko (8-15yrs)
Sunday, 23rd, April, 2023 | 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
£4.00This session has been designed for children and families who are home-educating their children. Taiko is big, loud, fun and is great for connecting, team-work and having fun with a meaningful purpose. Taiko is very active and if played with energy, can be a good addition to a fit and healthy lifestyle. We provide hearing protection for those who are sound-sensitive and aim to include everyone in our sessions – all we ask for is some enthusiasm and a willingness to give it a go.
Who is this for?
Suitable for children 8-15yrs (we do provide other sessions for younger children – see Tiny Beats), this session has been initiated by a home-educator who thought taiko would be a great activity for home-ed children and teens, along with their adults. At present, this is exclusively being opened within the home-ed networks around Exeter.
The focus is on team-work, non-verbal communication and self-expression. We encourage the adults to join-in, but if they don’t want to they can wait in the reception area outside. We find that with this age-group, it is uncomfortable to have people in the hall watching, so we ask that if you’re in the room, you take part in the session.
Everyone here is supported to enjoy a meaningful, social, community activity together. Taiko is a wonderful activity to do together, where children feel on a level with their adults, and can feel more connected, relaxed and empowered.
We will warm-up together, practice some basic strikes, set some rhythm challenges, and learn a rhythm pattern to play all together. There is usually time at the end of the session for free-play / improv on these wonderful big drums, for those who want it, but no-one is asked to do anything they’re not comfortable with. This session is held in a very relaxed, light, fun way, where everyone can feel they truly belong.
