This session has been designed for families who are home-educating their children. Taiko is big, loud, fun and everyone is supported to enjoy a meaningful, social, community activity together. Taiko is very active and if played with energy, can be a good addition to a fit and healthy lifestyle.

In September 2023 a home-educator thought taiko would be a great home-ed family activity, and initiated this session in collaboration with Taiko Journey. It was a great success (and over-subscribed!) so we’re continuing with them every three or four months and at present, this is exclusively being offered within the home-ed networks around Exeter.

Who is this for?

This session is for children 8-15yrs and their adults. We ask for adults to join-in so that it can be a shared experience, unless there is a reason they cannot. We provide hearing protection for those who are sound-sensitive and aim to include everyone in our sessions.

What to expect

We will warm-up together, practice some basic strikes, set some rhythm challenges, and learn a rhythm pattern to play all together. There is usually time at the end of the session for free-play / improv on these wonderful big drums, for those who want it, but no-one is asked to do anything they’re not comfortable with. This session is held in a very relaxed, light, fun way, where everyone can feel they truly belong.

How much does it cost?

The exchange is £15 for the first adult & child pair, and then £7.50 per additional adult, and £4 for siblings.

What should we bring?

Please wear comfortable clothing & flexible footwear (or be prepared to go barefoot) and bring a drink with you. All equipment is provided, including hearing protection for those who would like it.
