Taiko Jam 2022!
Monday, 19th, December, 2022 | 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
£12.00Let’s Jam!
Let’s get together and celebrate the closeness of the sun returning to our skies. All the drums will be out and we’ll put our energy into them until we’re all buzzing…buzzing our way out into the night to continue our celebrations at the local inn! Even if you haven’t played with us for a while, come along and help us drum back the sun!
Taiko Journey Mondays: No monthly, or termly payments…
Each week we individually craft the taiko drumming session so that it can be enjoyed as a unique experience, or cherished as a weekly practice. We understand that many of us are balancing unpredictable work and family lives, and we want to make this as accessible as possible. So if you’ve always wanted to try it out but can’t commit to an ongoing class, this is for you! And if you are available every week, this is for you too!
Is this session appropriate for me?
We don’t really have a linear progression with taiko, preferring to think of our journeys as ever-continuing spirals, so there is usually a wide range of experienced in the space, all learning something from everyone. It really is up to you and how you feel – if you’re up for it, you’re welcome to join us. We recommend you start with a “Beginners Welcome!” session, and then see where the road takes you…
Beginners Welcome!
Once a month we open our doors (and our hearts) to welcome in people new to taiko, and each time we will look at a different aspect of taiko from a beginner’s perspective. We believe in the potential of those new to taiko, and so there are plenty of challenges for even a seasoned taiko player in these sessions – we just don’t assume any prior taiko-specific knowledge. When we welcome beginners we join together, with open hearts and minds, to experience taiko anew, whatever our prior experience. For these specifically focussed sessions look out for the ” – Beginners Welcome!” tag on the workshop title.
Taiko Beats
Once a month we jump straight into a taiko song and look at the technique and kata needed to play and perform it. We do of course lead warm-ups and cool downs to keep everyone safe, and include one or two exercises to bring us together on the evening so we feel connected to others in the space. The focus here is just as it says – the taiko beats. Some prior taiko experience is advised.
What to expect:
Taiko Journey Mondays run from 6-8.30pm. This 2 1/2 hour session starts with a warm-up to prepare the body for playing, eases into connection with self, and opening up to playing with others, connecting with drums, learning some technique, focussing on one aspect of playing taiko each week. Whatever the topic, the sessions are held in a light-hearted, fun way, pushing our sense of comfort zones in a playful way, always coming back to what brings us joy. We close with a cool-down to end the session, and all stay to pack away the drums we’ve been playing.
What do I need to bring?
You will need comfortable clothing and flexible footwear (or go barefoot). You’ll probably get thirsty, so bring a drink (there is tap water available at the centre) and possibly a snack if you need it to keep your energy up.
Bachi are available to borrow on your first few workshops, but it is lovely to begin a connection with your own, connecting with them before each taiko session, building a relationship that will grow with you. (Available to buy from us at a session, or here online).
Ear-defenders and disposable earplugs are always available at every session – we promote looking after your hearing! If you’re a regular taiko player, please consider buying your own – they offer better protection and can be a worthwhile purchase longer term.
